Edgar Medina has come a long way in four years, when the Mexican émigré gave up a stint in dental school to pursue a career as a visual artist.  Medina told CultureMap that the first year was difficult, finding his style and making his name known. And then, all of a sudden, work started coming in.

Though he retains a work space at Hardy & Nance Street Studios, Medina has long searched for a gallery component to permanently display his art. Medina is a contemporary abstract painter, filling his canvases with bold, energetic color.

Off to the corner, there is a small, white-walled chamber; the perfect space for an art gallery.

That dream become a reality this week when the Edgar Medina Gallery opened up as a part of Native Citizen, a new home goods store on the corner of Dunlavy Street and Fairview Street, in a space flanked by the Dominic Walsh Dance Theater and Craft Salon.

That entire building has recently seen a facelift, with more doors and windows, understated landscaping, a fresh coat of paint and slatted wood panels added to the facade.

Inside, the store is bright and airy, filled with colorful lamps and mid-century modern furniture. Off to the corner, there is a small, white-walled chamber; the perfect space for an art gallery.

Medina will have a constant rotation of paintings lining the walls, plus sculptural pieces from other artist friends. The doors are open now — stop by and take a peek from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., seven days per week.
