What do you get when you mix European culinary training, Gulf Coast ingredients and a menu that changes daily? According to luxury travel website Gayot.com, you get one of the best new restaurants of 2011.
Sorrel Urban Bistro was the only Houston restaurant to make Gayot's Top 10 list, although Philippe Restaurant + Lounge earned honorable mention status. Sorrel has some prestigious company on the list, including a.kitchen in Philadelphia, Wolfgang Puck at Hotel Bel-Air and David Bouley's Brushstroke in New York.
Oddly, Gayot's actual review of Sorrel gave it a score of 14 out of 20 — high enough to be listed as "good," but a rating that leaves it tied with more than 50 other Houston establishments. However, since Gayot thinks no Houston restaurant merits more than a 16 (that would be the tally earned by Reef and Mark's American Cuisine) we'll just consider them tough graders.
