Birchbox co-founder Katia Beauchamp is down-to-earth, gorgeous and exceptionally savvy when it comes to running one of the hottest businesses in the beauty industry. So it comes as no surprise to us that this amazing woman is a native Texan. Even though she runs Birchbox from New York, she still calls El Paso home.
Beauchamp says the goal of Birchbox is to make everyone feel like they have a beauty editor for a best friend. She met fellow co-founder Hayley Barna at Harvard Business School, and Barna's best friend happens to be a beauty editor. They created Birchbox to help people filter through all the fuss of retail to find products that really work for them.
This Texas darling loves the Lone Star State, and she is very familiar with its climate. On a recent visit to her home state, Beauchamp talked products that all Texans need in their beauty arsenals — men included.
If you want to experiment with a bold lip, this chubby pencil is your new best friend. It's highly pigmented, incredibly easy to apply, and it comes in several colors ranging from magenta to berry. It even hydrates with a blend of oils and healing vitamin E, which we need here in this dry climate.
You can't talk summer essentials without mentioning sunscreen, but now it's becoming a year-round skin staple. Supergoop! is an incredible brand — also founded by a Texan — and this everyday lotion is lightweight, non-greasy, paraben-free and full of antioxidants.
A leave-in conditioning spray is a must for when your hair is its driest. This one is a favorite because it protects hair from UV damage, smoothes frizz and smells fantastic.
GO247 Styling Cream (Birchbox exclusive)
In mild weather, you generally want to stay away from really heavy hair stylers such as pomades. It's best to keep it light and flexible. This styling cream is super lightweight and has an easy, pliable hold. Perhaps most important, it adds texture to your hair.
One-time wipes are a big beauty trend, and this is among the Birchbox favorites because it exfoliates and moisturizes at the same time. The wipes are perfect for guys when transitioning from one thing to the next (work to drinks, for example). Keep them in your briefcase, desk drawer or pocket.
A team of MIT students developed this super-breathable (and totally seamless) men's T-shirt using thermal imaging and photogrammetric strain tests. It reacts to your body's temperature to keep you warm when you're cold and cool when you're heating up. Also, thanks to the perfect fabric blend and overall breathability, it never smells at the end of the day — and, most important, neither does the collared shirt you're wearing over it.
Given the strength of the sun in Texas, every-morning SPF application is crucial — for men, too. But you don't want goopy stuff that smells like sunblock, so Beauchamp recommends delivering sun protection (and the corresponding anti-aging benefits) with a moisturizer that comes with SPF 15 or 20. This product absorbs into skin quickly, and you won't sweat it off.
Baxter of California Hard Cream Pomade (Birchbox exclusive)
This is a unique hybrid product that gives guys' hair firm hold with a soft, matte (instead of shiny) finish. This stuff is seriously superior when it comes to standing up in the face of heat.
One of the season's biggest beauty blunders is definitely shiny skin. This perfecting powder keeps your complexion matte, and because it's mineral-based, it won't irritate skin. It's a huge customer favorite and a great product to have on hand if you're going to be in pictures.
