As a salute to Mother's Day, Recipe for Success founder Gracie Cavnar came up with an idea for a unique fundraiser: Highlight several of Houston's most stylish mother-daughter teams. Now in its third year, the Fashion Gene Awards have become a Houston tradition.

In advance of the May 7 runway show and dinner at Tootsies, the honorees posed in a fun way for photos by Phoebe Rourke-Ghabriel and had a lot to say about the mother/daughter sense of style, favorite designers and those occasional funny fashion misfires.

How has your mother influenced your fashion sense?

Alissa: To be a lady everyday. She is like a jewel box, lovely on the outside but what is inside is where the true beauty is.

How has your daughter influenced your fashion sense?

Virginia: She has taught me to pick clothes that keep me looking young. She always looks like a little doll. I am proud of how she has grown from my little girl to my best friend.

What is your daughter's biggest fashion faux pas?

Virginia: When she was in high school, she wore white lipstick. She was still so cute.

What is your mother's biggest fashion faux pas?

Alissa: As long as I can rememeber she has been a beautiful dresser. However, there was a moment of VERY oversized Ted Lapiz sunglasses that made her look like a bug!

Kristin Garcia Blomquist, left, and Karen Garcia

What is your favorite outfit of your daughter's?

Karen: Of course, I think she looks gorgeous no matter what she wears but I have to say her wedding dress!  She looked so beautiful in it during her wedding last year!  Also her ‘Barbie’ dress (so named because people comment that she looks like Barbie when she wears it).  I don’t know the designer but its one of the few I’ve seen her wear that is a little more daring and colorful.

What is your favorite outfit of your mother's?

Kristin: I would have to say her Halloween costume, because she rocked it.

 Who is your favorite designer?

Karen: Roberto Cavalli, Carolina Herrera, Ralph Lauren — this is really hard since there are so many that I like.

Kristin: Kate Spade, BOOM!  I love her style and COLOR! I’m not quite at a place where I can purchase her clothes. I just view them from the outside of the store and dream similar to a stray dog outside of a restaurant.

What is your favorite outfit of your daughter's?

Ileana: Wearing short shorts with patent leather Mary Janes and ruffled socks when she was two years old. That was her favorite look.

What is your favorite outfit of your mother's?

Who is your favorite designer?

Mari: Tory Burch.

Ileana: Oscar, of course.

Fashion genes mother daughter April 2014 Elise and Kelley Lubanko

Elise Lubanko, left, and Kelley Lubanko

What is your favorite outfit of your daughter's?

Kelley: My favorite outfit of Elise's is definitely any type of active wear. She loves the outdoors and is always happiest in the fresh air.

What is your favorite outfit of your mother's?

Elise: My mom is an absolutely beautiful woman, so in my opinion she looks good in anything. But, she has the perfect build for jeans, and always looks super cute about town.

What has been your daughter's biggest faux pas?

Kelley: When she was two, Elise refused to wear anything but a white onesie and a Christmas tree skirt festooned with Santa and his reindeer — daily —  for the entire year. Though certainly not trendy, it was pretty adorable.

What has been your mother's biggest faux pas?

Elise:  I think there were lots of hair mistakes made in the early '90s, and my mom had this particular hairstyle at that time that my sister and I dubbed "the mushroom cut," because it had the shape of a mushroom. She did pull it off but we have definitely made merciless fun of her for it in the years since.

How have your daughters influenced your fashion sense?

Susan: They both make me reach way beyond what I would ordinarily choose, which leans toward comfortable and boring.

How has your mother influenced your fashion sense?

Kelly: My mom and sister are my fashion sense. I might still be wearing a school uniform without them!

Lori: I love how she is always perfectly tailored. I'm not quite there yet but I aspire to be. Also that she wears her clothes so beautifully. They don't wear her.

Who is your favorite designer?

Susan: Truthfully, it's not the designer that interests me; if the fit's great and the color is me, I'll wear clothes all the way from Valentino to the Gap!

Kelly: I like to wear anything that's colorful, comfortable and fun -- from vintage to the occasional sneak into mom's closet.

Lori: I like Dolce & Gabbana for their prints and colors. That is the bulk of my evening wear. It's fun and elegant.   Also, I love Chanel and Hermès. So classic.

In one word describe your mother's style.

Kyrstin: Trendy.

Kacie: Self-assured.

In one word describe your daughters' style.

Cheryl: Kacie's style is eclectic, Kyrstin's style is trendy.

Who is your favorite designer?

Cheryl: Herve Leger.

Kyrstin: Alexander McQueen.

Kacie: My favorite popular designer is Marc Jacobs. However, I find myself wearing a lot of recycled fashion. I love the style of the '40s and '50s.

How have your daughters influenced your fashion sense?

Cheryl: Because of her eclectic sense of style, Kacie inspires me to take chances with my wardrobe.  I love the way Kacie can put simple things together, throw on a hat and look totally polished.

Like her mother, Kyrstin likes the latest and greatest fashions that come out. Kyrstin is always dressed to the tee, finishing off outfits with great jackets and/or scarves.  And she will always pick the perfect shoe, whether it be a trendy flat, sleek dress shoe or a great pair of boots.  She encourages me to experiment more with accessories.

After reviewing your questions  we really don't follow a style of fashion. We wear what ever our mood  is that day.  And typically it's workout gear. Or if we really feeling like getting dressed up, it's usually Ralph Lauren — Our favorite!
That's the best we can do!
