January is notoriously slow when it comes to retail. It’s all about out with the old to make room for the new, but I prefer to focus on the upside—there are lots of sales!

Jump in and don’t fret, for there are some new offerings out there, too.

Tootsies

When Tootsies takes off, it goes all the way. The luxury retailer kicks off its sale Thursday, marking designer collections, dresses, contemporary, sportswear, shoes, accessories and handbags up to 70 percent off. The sale ends Sunday.

M Penner

M Penner is also rocking sale season with discounts up to 70 percent off men’s and women’s clothing and accessories. Etro, John Varvatos, Ted Baker, Vince, AG Jeans and more are part of the sale, plus, it’s always nice to shop in one of the few family-owned clothing stores in Houston.

Elaine Turner

Full disclosure here. I work with Elaine Turner three days a week, but the sale at Rice Village and CityCentre stores is so good, it must be shared. Shoes, boots, bags, wallets, iPad cases and more are marked up to 60 percent off through Jan. 27.

Kendra Scott

Kendra Scott is continuing her Houston expansion with her newest colorful spot in CityCentre. Look for her store next to Anthropologie.

Stash

I haven’t made an appointment to meet the creators of Stash Co. in Sealy yet, but from I can tell, it will be well worth the trip. Cheryl Schulke makes leather bags by hand, honoring the skills and craftsmanship required for a love-of-a-lifetime kind of bag. The Stash story is worth more than just a quick hit in this column, but for now explore the site that also sells belts, aprons and totes, plus custom work as well.

Dice Boutique

River Oaks Shopping Center is always grooving with new shops for all tastes. Dice Boutique has opened with a sparkling wall of heels that beg to be worn for a night out and clothing for day-to-night.

Oolong Art

Just the name of the new Asian art gallery and shop in River Oaks Shopping Center sounds relaxing. Oolong Art celebrates its grand opening Jan. 18-25, offering Asian-inspired hand paintings, jade art, fine jewelry, tea art and more.

Peter Lik

Looking for some art to go with those cute frocks? The Peter Lik photography gallery opens at the end of January in the space previously occupied by Christian Dior in Galleria II.

Edward Sanchez Vanity Lounge

Houston's famous makeup artist to the stars had opened a glamorous lounge in West Ave, offering unique cosmetic and skincare lines such as Discover AinHoa from Spain, FaceAtelier from Canada, ModelCo from Australia and OHUI and The History of Whoo from Korea, along with a host of makeup and grooming services for women and men.

Sanchez will celebrate the opening at a big launch party at Katsuya on Jan. 23 from 9 p.m until midnight.

Dao Chloe Dao

Winter has arrived, which means cold and rain, with hits of sun here and there. This detachable trench was made for Houston and its mercurial weather. Check it out at Dao Chloe Dao for $99.
