We have been waiting and wondering: What is taking Sundance Cinemas so long to open its doors in Houston?

In February CultureMap was the first to report that Robert Redford's small cinema company would open in the space that the Angelika Film Center once occupied. How much renovation does it require to turn a movie theater into. . . another movie theater?

Actually, it may be more than you think. A lease wasn't finalized until the last day of March, the Angelika space was in really bad condition and Sundance has promised a lot of amenities, including good food and reserved seating, in the eight-screen complex.

As a sign went up on the exterior of Bayou Place Monday, Houston movie lovers were tweeting the good news. Officials plan a preview later this week, so stay tuned for more details.

Sundance Cinemas will open to the public on Nov. 23, after two days of special fundraising event receptions.
