Newcomers to Houston sometimes think that only big-budget blockbusters can be found in local movie houses. But dig beyond the traditional cineplex and you'll find an abundance of independent and foreign films in the Bayou City.
CultureMap contributor Joe Leydon recently appeared on Great Day Houston to talk about the cool movie houses in Houston where you can see such films. Leydon and host Deborah Duncan discussed the Sundance Cinemas, 14 Pews, Rice Media Center and the AMC 30, which regularly shows the best of Bollywood on three screens.
"They open the same day as they do in Delhi or Mumbai," Leydon says, thanks to digital projection.
Our CultureList of the best places to see an art house film also includes the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the River Oaks Theatre and the Alamo Drafthouse Mason Park.
Beginning on Friday, Leydon will offer a weekly column, titled "Mondo Cinema," which will focus on the outside-of-the-mainstream movies available around town.
