For some Americans, nothing says "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Hanukkah" quite like a pearl-handled pistol or a semi-automatic shotgun.
The FBI recorded more than 1.5 million background checks for gun sales in Dec. 2011, and approximately one-third of those took place in the week before Christmas. Gun dealers have little reason to believe that their sales will be smaller this holiday season.
"President Obama indicated in the second debate he was thinking of restricting high-cap magazines and I think there is some fear there," Chris Rhodes of Spring Guns and Ammo tells KHOU, explaining an uptick in firearm sales before the shootings in Newtown.
His store has also been selling self-defense stocking stuffers — such as knives, bullets and earmuffs — like hot cakes. But, Rhodes laughs, they don't gift wrap.
