Update: The Eagle newspaper in College Station is reporting that a police officer shot in the shooting has died and that at least five victims were taken to College Station Medical Center.

A shooter with automatic weapons opened fire on a residential College Station street, just blocks from Texas A&M University's campus, Monday afternoon. Before any official details became available, Twitter erupted with reports of a "mass shooting."
A police source tells KiiiTV that "multiple people" were shot, including some police officers. The shooter is in police custody.
Details on the conditions of the victims are not available yet. There are no reports of any fatalities at this time.
The university first reported the "active shooter" on its emergency page at 12:29 p.m stating, "Please avoid the area. Residents in the immediate area need to remain inside their residence."
By 12:38 p.m., the emergency page revealed the shooter was still active and on the 200 block of Fidelity Drive — a short walk from Texas A&M's athletics complex, including Kyle Field, the football stadium.
College Station Police Department reported that the shooter was in custody as of 12:44 p.m.
This is a slow time at the university with summer classes having ended and the fall semester not set to begin until Aug. 27.
