At 8:16 a.m. on Monday, the brand new Texas Children's Hospital Pavilion for Women saw its first delivery: Brayten Green, a healthy baby boy weighing in at six pounds, six ounces.

Even before the building was complete, the Texas Children's Pavilion had its sights set on mom Andrea Green, who doctors deemed high risk after she was diagnosed with vasa previa, a potentially devastating pregancy complication.

"We had the best opportunity to bring him into the world," new dad Brandon Green said.

A scheduled cesarean section — performed by Dr. Michael Belfort, obstetrician and gynecologist-in-chief at Texas Children’s Hospital and chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), and Dr. Susan Leong-Kee of BCM Obstetrics and Gynecology — which took place just minutes after the facility's official opening, ensured that the mom and baby were well cared for.

"We had the best opportunity to bring him into the world," said new dad Brandon Green.

The 15-story, $575 million hospital opened as a premiere center for women's, fetal and newborn health, and it connects to the hospital's other patient care buildings by a circular, two-story sky bridge. On Monday night, the lighted bridge was illuminated blue in celebration of Brayten's safe birth.
