After months of learning about different sectors of the city and the issues facing its populace, Leadership Houston Class XXXI was tasked with turning out a project. It was the obesity statistics in Houston's Fifth Ward that propelled the city's young leaders into action.
"We had to come up with a project that impacts Houston in a positive way but also addresses a need in an underserved community," Dana Heatherton, opening ceremony coordinator for the organization, explained to CultureMap of the idea for LH Fit, a state-of-the-art outdoor fitness facility constructed at the McReynolds Middle School SPARK Park in Denver Harbor.
"The main thing is that we wanted to get the community involved," said Heatherton, who helped bring together marching bands, dance teams, elected officials and more for the big reveal last Saturday. And the facility, outfitted with perhaps the only movable outdoor gym equipment in Texas, was a hit.
