Urban Harvest Farmers Market
|
Houston has been a little late to the "eat local" food movement. But the fledgling cause has found a home in a gigantic parking lot in the Upper Kirby area, where vendors set up stalls early every Saturday morning, offering locally grown vegetables, organic meat, fresh fish, eggs and other farm-to-market products. Strike up a conversation with the vendors, who usually are in the same location every weekend. The ever-expanding operation is overseen by Urban Harvest, a non-profit organization that believes fruit, vegetable and habitat gardens improve everyone's quality of life.
Even though the address is on Richmond Ave., you can't see the farmer's market from there. Drive or walk around to the parking lot at the rear of the building on Eastside St. Dogs on a leash are welcomed.
