Just like when you go to your grandma’s to eat, there’s no menu chalkboard or otherwise at this cult Tex-Mex institution in the Warehouse District. Irma Galvan decides the two or three dishes that will be prepared daily and then waitresses recite the options. Her lemonade is legendary, blended with a spectrum of fresh fruit which makes it taste like you’ve ordered a virgin sangria. If you want to brush-up on the history of Houston, just look around as the walls in this homey cafe are covered with newspaper and magazine clippings, sports memorabilia and photos. For 22 years, Irma's was only open on weekday lunch, but now she's added dinner on Thursday, Friday and Saturday — written menu included — plus she stays open 'til 7 p.m. whenever the Astros are playing. No matter when you go, be aware that Irma is probably there, and like any grandma, she’s going to get after you if you don’t clean your plate.
