The Houston Symphony, founded in 1913, is one of America’s oldest performing arts organizations. During the 1940s, our hometown symphony became a major international sensation after being commissioned for new work and recordings by Leopold Stokowski. Today, each exciting season consists of more than 170 concerts attended by about 350,000 people annually. Most performances are in Jones Hall but there is a regular series of free concerts in Miller Outdoor Theater so that everyone can appreciate the beautiful music. The Houston Symphony also features a popular pops series and runs a vigorous outreach program that works with underprivileged children in local communities to expose kids to live classical music. It’s cultural democracy, and we love it.
