Brazos Bookstore
|
In a world of supermarket-sized bookstores, we like the quiet grace of Brazos, a place where you’re welcomed to curl up in a chair and flip through a book or have a thought-provoking conversation with fellow literature lovers. The little shop, tucked into a nondescript strip shopping center, has been Ground Zero for Houston's book scene since the 1970s. It's a longstanding literary salon that has hosted everyone from Susan Sontag to Molly Ivins. The staff knows books and can easily offer suggestions for any interest. At Brazos, you can forgo all of the ho-hum hardbacks and predictable paperbacks to peruse a carefully curated selection of literature. There is also a great children’s section, an extensive art book section and an utterly outrageous travel section.
The bookstore is considered so important to Houston's literary scene that when founder Karl Killian decided to sell Brazos in 2006, a consortium of Houston book lovers chipped in to purchase it.
