The Lowdown

This is not a museum, but art lovers who don’t have the financial clout to be art collectors still flock to this gallery to look and admire, because Barbara Davis Gallery always exhibits groundbreaking contemporary work. For over two decades, Davis has been one of the high priestesses of modern art in Houston, having launched the careers of international artists such as Julie Mehretu and Shaziah Sikander and bringing the city influential names including Louise Bourgeois, Joseph Bueys, Kiki Smith and Andy Warhol. Located in the Museum District, this gallery is a more intimate stop after you’ve perused the nearby Contemporary Arts Museum or expansive Museum of Fine Arts.
