Baba Yega

This converted Montrose bungalow named after a Slavic witch has been a funky local favorite since 1975. Baba Yega feels like what it is, a home, but with several distinct settings: under the shade of a century old oak tree on the front porch, on the backyard veranda overlooking a lush garden, or inside in one of the cozy rooms. Since Houston’s weather has a certain muggy-Saigon quality, Baba Yega is one of the few restaurants in town with a wood-burning fireplace to warm you, along with a glass of wine, when the city experiences the occasional cold snap. Sunday brunch is a lively institution complete with an omelet station, waffle bar and cocktails galore—get here early, because reservations are not accepted and once people arrive, they stay put. For lunch, try the smoked turkey sandwich with brie or the grilled vegetable sandwich topped with feta cheese and Serrano pepper sauce. For dinner, the delicious daily specials include a Monday steak night and create-your-own pasta on Tuesdays.
