Sophisticated Tex-Mex bistro Armandos has been a clubby hangout for Houston’s social set and practically a requirement for big-name visitors (from bad-boy Mick Jagger to the refined Prince Albert of Monaco) since it first opened in 1978 (it reopened in its current Upper Kirby corridor location in 2007 after a lengthy hiatus). The velvety mole (a complex brown chili sauce that involves dozens of ingredients and carries hints of unsweetened chocolate) is imported from Puebla, the mecca of mole, and this staple along with gossamer-thin handmade tortillas and top-shelf margaritas keep patrons coming back for more. The atmosphere is an elegant mixture of Spanish- and French-colonial Mexico.
Casual, this ain't—suit up, ladies and gents, or head next door to Chuy's instead.
