Allen's Landing
|
We were born on the Bayou—this parcel of just under two acres is a touchstone in the story of Houston. In this spot in 1836 August C. and John Kirby Allen came ashore and claimed the place destined to become our thriving metropolis. Houston’s first commercial port was established here at the convergence of Buffalo and White Oak Bayous, and the boom began. Allen’s Landing has recently undergone major revitalization and rejuvenation efforts to the tune of $4.6 million that includes a handsome park with a promenade, a terraced grass lawn, a concrete wharf which mimics the original port, and public artwork. It’s not only our version of Plymouth Rock, it's a pretty place to hang out.
