Cactus Music and Record Ranch
Music memorabilia, vintage photographs and retro concert posters cover the walls of this funky shop that has been prized for its prime and often unique selection of music since it opened in 1975. You could spend an entire afternoon in this Houston institution combing through the CDs and nostalgic LPs and visiting the in-house music-themed art gallery. We especially love the frequent live concerts here featuring local and touring artists. Downloading music at home may be faster and easier, but it’s just not the same as a trip to Cactus.
Houston record lovers went into deep depression when this indie shop abruptly shut down in 2006. But it was reincarnated about a half-mile south to a new location in Shepherd Plaza in 2007. It's better than ever, but we miss that funky Cactus sign that marked the old spot.
