Houston Polo Club
Just past the jogging trails and bucolic picnic areas of Memorial Park, magnificent polo players on magnificent ponies race after a ball the size of a snuff box, competing with hot blood, cool heads and acrobatic horsemanship. During the fall and spring seasons, some of the highest-ranked teams in the U.S. thunder across the Houston Polo Club’s lush, green grounds in a series of heart-stopping tournaments. Among the many regular players: actor Tommy Lee Jones (who took a rugged spill from his polo pony here several years ago that scared spectators, sent him to the hospital and made international headlines). Try and snag a ticket for a Sunday final because that’s when you will find the juiciest, best-dressed crowds and the most intense matches. Ticket prices are far less than the cost to see any one of the city’s professional sports teams and usually benefit a charity. But don’t let the champagne, sumptuous tailgate picnics and women sporting elegant straw hats fool you—polo is a serious sport.
