The night is the theme for all three works on this piano recital by University of Houston professor Tali Morgulis. A little night music by Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks is a dramatic ballad, full of contrasts between sound and silence, severity and freedom. Robert Schumann's Nachtstücke Op. 23 explores the world of mystery and nightmare. One of the recent works by George Crumb, titled A Little Midnight Piano Music, is based on Thelonious Monk's theme and is a suspenseful, lyrical ode to the night. It is full of reminiscences of Monk, Debussy and Wagner, and it showcases different extended techniques (playing "beyond the keys") in the most marvelous way.
