Neva Mikulicz is a Houston artist working in pencil on paper drawings combined with projected/embedded videos. The series of 13 works are collectively entitled They All Wore Pearls by Mikulicz and, with one exception, are images depicting women in a variety of situations and roles.
The detailed drawings are based on photographs she finds in family albums and archives alike. They represent a return to a baby boomer childhood of the 1950s, but each photograph, in being re-rendered by her pencil, acquires a nearly ineffable unease. It is in this tension that the artist finds her distinct voice.
