In Hindu mythology, the mother goddess is called Parvathi or Adi Parashakthi. From her, all other goddesses are manifest, including Devi, the divine mother. Devi is the female counterpart of Deva, the male supreme lord, and acts as a balancing power of the male aspect, also called Purusha. Other manifestations of Parvathi include Saraswathi, goddess of knowledge; Durga, goddess of courage; Lakshmi, goddess of prosperity; and others.

Prema Bhat, who's a South Indian classical vocalist, conducts a musical performance featuring songs about Devi and her various forms by celebrated composers from the 16th through the 20th centuries.
