William Marsh Rice arrived in Houston in 1838, and he played a prominent role in the business life of Houston for the rest of the century. He was murdered in New York City in 1900, but his legacy to Houston lives on in the form of Rice University. This talk will give an overview of Rice's life and controversial death and explain how the Rice Institute was created.
