Gallery Jatad art opening reception: Mário Macilau: The Price of Cement and Recent Work and Rachel Wiley-Janota: aeonian echoes
Gallery Jatad presents the photography of Mozambique artist Mário Macilau in association with the Fotofest 2014 Biennial. Mário Macilau is a rising international star who documents the social and environmental issues of East Africa with aesthetic sensibilities. The exhibition will contrast these candid and often stark images of contemporary African life with a selection of antique traditional African figurative sculpture that convey an idyllic view of life, spirituality and beauty. Together, the contemporary photography and traditional art provide a commentary on changing social roles in a complex society.
aeonian echoes includes new work from emerging photographer Rachel Wiley-Janota, who manipulates images taken on her cell phone and prints them on aluminum plates to create a look and feel similar to tintypes or ambrotypes. The result is a mixture of contemporary technology, early photography materials and painterly aesthetics. Wiley-Janota has had multiple exhibitions as a landscape painter. This is her first exhibition at Gallery Jatad and the first solo exhibition of her photography.
On view from March 13 through April 26.
