Da Camera presents the world premiere of a new chamber work by Paris-based Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho commissioned specifically for and inspired by Rothko Chapel. Across a crowded contemporary musical landscape, Saariaho stands apart with her sensual, expansive soundscapes and sensitive spirituality. Carnegie Hall's 2011-12 composer-in-residence and the winner of the prestigious Grawemeyer Award, Saariaho turns to texts by American poet Ezra Pound to create Sombre, a powerfully evocative work featuring baritone Daniel Belcher, well known to Houston Grand Opera audiences and the star of Saariaho's recent opera, Amour de loin.
The concert includes Ballade, Dolce Tormento and Fall by Saariaho as well as piano works by Ravel and Messiaen.
