Never love a pet. Always count on a flood. Always wear white underwear.
These are lessons a little girl learns as she grows up in Highlands, Texas, a small town where most of the children run around barefoot and raise themselves. Their parents are grown-up children with healthy drug habits and lengthy arrest records.
River Bottom Rules explores this microcosm through the eyes of a young girl using a mix of shadow puppetry, projections, video and photography, with the help of Houston puppeteer Camella Clements. The show takes documentation from the lives of the children who were raised in Highlands, including director Lindsay Burleson, to recreate the world of growing up in this unusual reality.
