Enlight is a mandala inspired solo exhibition by Houston artist Emily Sloan, DARKE gallery's artist in residence for 2012. The four Saturdays in August are open studio days, when the public can stop in and see the work in progress from 2 to 4 p.m. These open houses will include a simple time to visit, a performance exercise or something inspired by mandalas.
Mandala is a Sanskrit word meaning circle. In the Buddhist and Hindu religious traditions, art often takes a mandala form. These concentric diagrams are used as spiritual teaching tools and as aids to meditation and trance induction. Thinking of the cosmos and spiritual tools, Sloan will create mandala inspired installations and performance art. The exhibition will include a series of mandala shade sculptures with lights large and small, some appearing to levitate off of the floor.
On view through Sept. 29.
